Weighted like a dumbbell I’m in the kitchen cutting onions And the salt on my cheeks tastes like black and blue seas crashing over my window Sipping coffee by the yellow light Beaming bright onto a violet night Are those the sails of your ship peeking out from a cover of cumulonimbus ? But all I see Is the absence of you Banality I sit and I wait But all I see Is the absence of you But all I see I sit and I wait Words appear on paper Confessing crass infatuation And every word leaves my lips With the salt taste of sweat dropping off of my eyebrow It’s hurtful to claim to be prophetic You’re eating apathy for breakfast Needing sumptuous elation Savouring fruits that have oxidised n rotted Cus all I see Is the absence of you Banality I sit and I wait All I see is you lamp lit, by the black sea Crumbling rocks, lighthouse, blue lightning Godless and forgotten lips locked everlasting Leaving what we know for what we don’t, what we can’t see Do I dare to follow or can I stay here without truth Darling I fear I’m being swallowed by your absence Heavy is the hull of sinking boats without a crew It’s true all I see is you

about

A compendium of forward-thinking collaborations between local and international artists, Everything is What We Thought It Was is the duo’s latest addition to their cinematic synth-pop cosmos. From uniting with hip-hop heavyweight Substantial, to New Zealand-born Sydney-based songwriter Wallace and ARIA Award-nominated artist Odette, brothers Beau and Casey Golden produce some of their most colourful and other-worldly work to date, ripe for repeat play.

The sampled spoken word of “Before There Was An Earth” opens the EP as an invitation into the duo’s alternate universe of arpeggiating synths and wandering production. Second track, “Weightless” is a slice of cinematic synth-pop featuring the soulful vocals of New Zealand singer Wallace. The pair’s expansive production accompany Wallace’s sultry vocals, creating a retro-futuristic sound that is at once modern and nostalgic.

Next, arrives the previous single, “As The World Burns” featuring hip-hop heavyweight, Substantial. Named one of the great MCs of our time by Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Substantial’s cool and collected flow accompanies a luscious synth arrangement as he lyrically marches out a tale of climate change and its many costs. Fourth track and lead single from the EP, “Salt” features the fluttering vocals of Odette. A swarming and jittering arrangement of synths marries with the experimental highs of Odette’s vocal.

Up next, previous single “On The Run” enters as a sparkling and rippling slice of psychedelia-tinged funk, electronic and soul featuring the vocals of The Goods frontman, KYVA. “Nathalie” features an undercurrent of churning and soaring synths entwining with the weaving melodies and effected vocals from the Sweden-born, Sydney-based indie singer-songwriter, Mila Nile.

Closing out the EP is “Superstructure”, featuring American bassist and experimental musician MonoNeon, known for being one of the last people to work with Prince. The track holds feelings of grandeur as thick chordal synths, sampled spoken word and a pastiche of analog effects colour the final statement in this body of work.
